Theory of Advertising
Strong and Weak Theory of Advertising
Over the last decade an argument has developed over how advertising works (Pickton & Broderick). This argument is about the effects of the advertising and it centred on the strong and weak effects of the advertising. The most famous theorists about this argument are Ehrenberg and J.P.Jones and their theories are the most presented ones so we can see their arguments about this theories
Strong Theory of Advertising
There are several reasons why advertising is such an important part of many marketers promotional mixes (Belch 2001) Because advertising can affect the degrees of change in the attitudes, knowledge, beliefs and behaviors of the audiences (Fill 2003). Therefore this theory hold that advertising can persuade someone to buy a product that have never bought before (Fill 2003) and it can accomplish repeating long term buying behavior. The other theory hold that advertising is believed to be capable of increasing sales at the brand and class levels (Fill 2003) and has a direct and positive impact on sales and some sophisticated sales analysis are proofs of this idea (Pickton & Broderick 2005). In addition to this similar to Pickton’s argument, Belch (2001) also says advertising can used for to create brand images and symbols for company or brand. For example since 80s Absolut has been using a creative advertising to be different from other brands. They positioned the Absolut brand as a fashionable and sophisticated drink with using its distinctive shape of bottle in the ads. For the ads they prefer to use print ads and as a result of this the campaign become one of the most successful and recognizable campaign in the advertising history and it has made the Absolut brand nearly remembered as the same meaning with vodka and when people heard “vodka”word the first thing coming to their minds is started to be Absolut. After all of these Absolut sales have increased 10 fold and have gathered 70 percent market share (Belch 2001) As we can see advertising can create an brand image and increase the sales. According to Pickton (2005) we can summarize that advertising is a strong promotional element which works by:
-Persuading people to buy
-Creating and building brands,
-Differentia ting between brands and
-Increasing sales
Weak Theory of Advertising
Most notable writer who has got arguments about this theory is “Ehrenberg who believes that a consumer’s pattern of brand purchases is driven more by habit than by exposure to promotional messages” Fill (2003) Due to this fact Ehrenberg suggested a framework which is the awareness-trial-reinforcement (ATR) framework. Awareness is necessary before any buying made and the period between the awareness and the action will be very short or very long term (Fill 2003) After this a very few people convinced to try the product and this can be effected by retail availability, advertising, word of mouth or personal selling. And the following stage of this framework is reinforcement which follows to provide awareness and reassurance to help the audience to repeat the thinking and behavior and placed the product for the occasional buying. In this framework advertising’s role is to cause brand familiarity and provide identification (Ehrenberg, 1997) So according to Ehrenberg advertising just provides more power on the consumers habits and make them to choose and buy the brand between the other brands already exists in their minds.
The other framework to use for this theory is hierarchy of effects model which some of the strong force argument is based as the hierarchy presumes not only a specific series of effects but that these effects are achieved through a process of persuasion (Pickton, 2005). The most quoted hierarchy of effects model is AIDA. Before this model accepted as a sales training model but then it was adopted as a process for marketing communications (Pickton, 2005) The AIDA model’s principal is to move people from levels of unawareness to awareness and by this to develop interest and desire and then make them to start action to buy the product (Pickton,2005) Advertising’s role therefore is to make the market aware and provide sufficient messages to make people desire to purchase. But the argument is that people don’t do their purchase decision through these steps and as a result of this advertising does not work by the hierarchy process. In addition to this there are some facts that most of the advertising is used by already well known brands so there can’t be any need for providing awareness for the already famous brands like Gucci or Guess.
As a result of this the weak force can make 2 points generally people not hump on to go for to buy the products after seeing the advertising. And 2nd “as competing brands also advertise, if people were to be persuaded, they would have stores of different brands of the same product.” Pickton (2005) So if people convinced to buy the every product that are advertised, they would have a lot of different brands and same product in their houses.
Another important point is that according to Ehrenberg after 50 studies about product categories they find out that the purchase behavior is mostly habitual and it can change weekly. But if advertising would be a strong force this could not be case.
However there are still some queries about advertising effectiveness on target audience. Because it is still unknown if the advertising persuade the audience to think and feel the same way about the product, service or organization etc. In addition to this the effect of the advertising on sales can’t be measure clearly. As a result of these we can see that nobody is sure about the effects of the advertising is in positive way or in negative way. And nobody is sure about spending so much money on advertising is effective for to attract the audience.
Furthermore advertising is not reliable as the other tools such as PR (public relations) when it comes to receiving messages. So sometimes target audience see advertising as a tool which is only focusing on selling product and earning money. And they don’t trust the things they are saying in the advertising. Therefore there are still some questionmarks in people’s minds.
Conversely there are still positive effects of advertising. Because some popular advertising campaigns attract consumers attention and can help generate sales (Belch, E.G. & Belch, A.M. 2001). And they can develop awareness and positive image for the product or service. We can give ‘milk mustache’ campaign as an good example of this. The aim of this campaign is to change the image of the milk and increase the milk consumption in the US. It became so successful that milk is became popular in US again.
But “in fact, the best available evidence suggests that soft drink advertising, indeed all advertising, has little effect on consumption at the aggregate (total industry) level”. This is especially true when advertising effects are contrasted with other factors that affect consumption ( Kinnucan, W.H 1999 ) As we can see even this fact this campaign became successful.
In conclusion even the effects of advertising is hard to measure, we can see it is still effective and important factor for the service or product to attrack and send their messages to target audience. So advertising is a must for every service and product.

Cerita Gadis Pesisir
Aku seorang gadis cilik yang berumur 14 tahun. Aku dan keluargaku tinggal di sebuah daerah pesisir pantai kepulauan Nusa Tenggara Barat. Ayahku seorang nelayan, sedangkan ibuku hanya ibu rumah tangga yang setia menjaga aku dan adikku dirumah. Saat ini aku bersekolah di SMP Negeri 2 Nusa Tenggara Barat. Jarak rumahku ke sekolah sekitar 200 meter. Setiap hari aku berjalan kaki kesekolah dan hanya beralaskan sandal jepit, karena ayahku tidak mampu untuk membelikanku sepatu, apalagi sebuah sepeda untuk aku bersekolah. Tetapi aku bersyukur karena aku masih bisa menuntut ilmu disekolah dibandingkan dengan anak-anak lain diluar sana yang mungkin tidak dapat bersekolah seperti aku. Dan syukur Alhamdulillah, semenjak dua tahun yang lalu biaya sekolahku sudah dibebaskan. Sehingga dapat mengurangi beban biaya hidup orang tuaku. Tidak hanya itu, sekolahku yang dulunya jelek bahkan hampir roboh, sekarang sudah diperbaiki menjadi lebih baik dari sebelumnya.
Setiap hari aku bangun pagi sekali. Aku menunaikan sholat subuh, kemudian membantu ibu memasak didapur dan membersihkan rumah. Rumahku hanya rumah sederhana yang lebarnya kurang lebih 5 meter dan panjangnya 8 meter. Dinding-dindingnya hanya terbuat dari kayu yang beratapkan seng dan ditutupi oleh banyak rumbia. Setelah membersihkan rumah, aku segera berangkat kesekolah. Senang rasanya bisa bertemu teman-temanku . Dengan semangat yang tinggi, aku belajar dengan sungguh-sungguh untuk mengejar cita-citaku.
Tidak terasa sudah waktunya untuk pulang. Sesampainya dirumah, aku langsung menuju dapur untuk mengambil makanan yang telah disediakan ibu. Setiap hari aku hanya makan makanan seadanya saja, untuk hari ini aku makan nasi dengan lauk ikan asin dan tahu goreng. Maklum ayahku hanya seorang nelayan yang berpenghasilan sangat pas-pasan. Apalagi kalau cuaca sedang buruk, ayahku tidak dapat menghasilkan apa-apa. Tapi itu tidak masalah asalkan ayahku selamat daripada harus mengambil resiko untuk berlayar. Hari ini aku duduk termenung di pinggiran pantai dekat rumahku. Aku sedih melihat alam yang semakin rusak seperti sekarang ini. Tidak lama ayahku datang menghampiriku, kemudian mengajakku kedasar laut untuk menyelam bersama. Ya Tuhan, betapa sedihnya aku melihat terumbu-terumbu karang yang semakin rusak. Sesampainya kembali ke perahu, ayah berbicara kepadaku.
” Apakah kamu lihat nak terumbu-terumbu karang yang rusak itu? Itu adalah hasil dari perbuatan tangan-tangan jahat manusia yang tega mencemari dan merusak laut. ” kata ayah.
” Iya aku melihatnya yah, bagaimana bisa terumbu – terumbu karang itu rusak yah?” tanyaku.
” Orang-orang itu mencari ikan hanya untuk keuntungan semata tanpa melihat akibatnya. Mereka menangkap ikan dengan cara meledakkannya atau memberi racun. Mereka tidak pernah berfikir, butuh berapa lama waktu bagi terumbu karang untuk hidup kembali. Bagaimana jadinya nanti kalau terumbu karang yang sebagai habitat ikan tidak dapat lagi memberi tempat untuk ikan-ikan berkembang biak.” kata ayah.
”Iya kalau terumbu-terumbu karang itu rusak, jadi ikan-ikan tidak punya tempat buat melindungi telur-telurnya ya yah?” tanya aku.
”Iya kamu betul sekali nak, jadi semakin sulit untuk nelayan seperti ayah dalam mencari ikan.” jawab ayah.
Selama perjalanan ke daratan aku merenungkan apa yang yang terjadi dengan lautku. Aku berfikir betapa kayanya negeri ini. Indonesia merupakan negara maritim terbesar didunia. Kalau saja hasil laut ini bisa dikelola dengan baik, mungkin para nelayan seperti ayahku bisa lebih terjamin kehidupannya. Tetapi sepertinya pemerintah terlalu sibuk untuk memikirkan kami, rakyat pesisir yang sangat tergantung dengan laut. Untuk melaut, ayahku membutuhkan solar utnuk perahunya, namun harganya semakin lama semakin naik. Padahal kalau kita dapat mengelola hasil bumi kita secara mandiri, maka kita bisa mengatur ekonomi negara kita sendiri. Indonesia kan tidak hanya kaya akan hasil tambangnya, tetapi juga kaya akan sumber alam lain yang dapat digunakan sebagai pengganti bahan bakar minyak. Namun pemerintah belum mau memberi fasilitas untuk mengembangkannya. Yah.. aku hanya bisa merenungkannya saja. Mudah-mudahan suatu saat negaraku tercinta ini bisa tumbuh mandiri dan bisa memakmurkan seluruh rakyatnya. Amin...
Sesampainya didarat, aku berencana utuk bermain bersama teman-teman sebayaku. Sebagi anak pesisir, aku sudah akrab sekali bermain dengan laut. Aku dan teman-temanku biasa untuk berenang bersama sambil mencari ikan yang nantinya bisa kami makan bersama. Hari ini aku berkumpul dengan teman-temanku dibawah pohon kelapa dipinggir pantai. Teman-temanku yang datang bernama Dini, Sari, Ria, Adit, Toto dan Anton. Setelah semua berkumpul, kami mengambil perahu sederhana buatan kami sendiri untuk mencari ikan di laut.
Setelah sampai ditengah laut, aku, Dini dan Sari kebagian menunggu di perahu, sedangkan yang lainnya dapat kebagian menyelam untuk mencari ikan. Setelah beberapa lama akhirnya kami mendapatkan lumayan banyak ikan. Setelah cukup, kami kembali ke pinggir pantai. Sesampainya di pantai langsung saja kami mencari kayu-kayu kering. Sambil mencari batang-batang kayu kering, terkadang kami mendapatkan kepiting. Daging kepiting rasanya sangat enak. Tetapi sayang hari ini kami tidak mendapatkan kepiting. Setelah semua kayu terkumpul, kami bakar ikannya bersama-sama. Wah seru sekali rasanya. Selain rasa ikannya yang enak, berkumpul dan bercanda dengan teman-temanku adalah waktu yang sangat istimewa. Tidak terasa ikannya sudah habis, langsung saja temanku adit dan anton memanjat salah satu pohon kelapa untuk mengambil kelapa yang masih muda. Maklum kami semua kehausan. Selagi mereka memanjat pohon, Toto mengambil pisau kerumahnya yang tidak begitu jauh dari pantai. Sedangkan aku dan yang lain menunggu kelapa yang dilemparkan Adit dan Anton kebawah. Wuih.. segarnya air kelapa ini. Sehabis kami minum airnya, batok-batok kelapa itu kami cat dengan cat warna untuk dibentuk menjadi wajah-wajah manusia. Lucunya gambar-gambar kami, ada yang gambarnya wajah sedang tertawa, menangis, tersenyum, dan marah. Yah semua itu cuma sebagai ekspresi aku dan teman-temanku saja. Tak terasa waktu sudah sore dan kami harus segera pulang.
Sesampainya dirumah aku membantu ibu mengurus adik-adikku. Kemudian aku mandi dan memandikan adik-adikku juga. Malam harinya aku belajar dan mengerjakan tugas dari sekolah. Setelah semuanya selesai, aku bersiap-siap untuk tidur. Dengan hanya beralaskan kasur tipis aku dan adikku tidur bersama. Malam ini aku berdoa, semoga hari esok lebih baik dari hari ini. Dan semoga apa yang aku cita-citakan dapat terwujud duatu saat nanti. Amin....
Aku seorang gadis cilik yang berumur 14 tahun. Aku dan keluargaku tinggal di sebuah daerah pesisir pantai kepulauan Nusa Tenggara Barat. Ayahku seorang nelayan, sedangkan ibuku hanya ibu rumah tangga yang setia menjaga aku dan adikku dirumah. Saat ini aku bersekolah di SMP Negeri 2 Nusa Tenggara Barat. Jarak rumahku ke sekolah sekitar 200 meter. Setiap hari aku berjalan kaki kesekolah dan hanya beralaskan sandal jepit, karena ayahku tidak mampu untuk membelikanku sepatu, apalagi sebuah sepeda untuk aku bersekolah. Tetapi aku bersyukur karena aku masih bisa menuntut ilmu disekolah dibandingkan dengan anak-anak lain diluar sana yang mungkin tidak dapat bersekolah seperti aku. Dan syukur Alhamdulillah, semenjak dua tahun yang lalu biaya sekolahku sudah dibebaskan. Sehingga dapat mengurangi beban biaya hidup orang tuaku. Tidak hanya itu, sekolahku yang dulunya jelek bahkan hampir roboh, sekarang sudah diperbaiki menjadi lebih baik dari sebelumnya.
Setiap hari aku bangun pagi sekali. Aku menunaikan sholat subuh, kemudian membantu ibu memasak didapur dan membersihkan rumah. Rumahku hanya rumah sederhana yang lebarnya kurang lebih 5 meter dan panjangnya 8 meter. Dinding-dindingnya hanya terbuat dari kayu yang beratapkan seng dan ditutupi oleh banyak rumbia. Setelah membersihkan rumah, aku segera berangkat kesekolah. Senang rasanya bisa bertemu teman-temanku . Dengan semangat yang tinggi, aku belajar dengan sungguh-sungguh untuk mengejar cita-citaku.
Tidak terasa sudah waktunya untuk pulang. Sesampainya dirumah, aku langsung menuju dapur untuk mengambil makanan yang telah disediakan ibu. Setiap hari aku hanya makan makanan seadanya saja, untuk hari ini aku makan nasi dengan lauk ikan asin dan tahu goreng. Maklum ayahku hanya seorang nelayan yang berpenghasilan sangat pas-pasan. Apalagi kalau cuaca sedang buruk, ayahku tidak dapat menghasilkan apa-apa. Tapi itu tidak masalah asalkan ayahku selamat daripada harus mengambil resiko untuk berlayar. Hari ini aku duduk termenung di pinggiran pantai dekat rumahku. Aku sedih melihat alam yang semakin rusak seperti sekarang ini. Tidak lama ayahku datang menghampiriku, kemudian mengajakku kedasar laut untuk menyelam bersama. Ya Tuhan, betapa sedihnya aku melihat terumbu-terumbu karang yang semakin rusak. Sesampainya kembali ke perahu, ayah berbicara kepadaku.
” Apakah kamu lihat nak terumbu-terumbu karang yang rusak itu? Itu adalah hasil dari perbuatan tangan-tangan jahat manusia yang tega mencemari dan merusak laut. ” kata ayah.
” Iya aku melihatnya yah, bagaimana bisa terumbu – terumbu karang itu rusak yah?” tanyaku.
” Orang-orang itu mencari ikan hanya untuk keuntungan semata tanpa melihat akibatnya. Mereka menangkap ikan dengan cara meledakkannya atau memberi racun. Mereka tidak pernah berfikir, butuh berapa lama waktu bagi terumbu karang untuk hidup kembali. Bagaimana jadinya nanti kalau terumbu karang yang sebagai habitat ikan tidak dapat lagi memberi tempat untuk ikan-ikan berkembang biak.” kata ayah.
”Iya kalau terumbu-terumbu karang itu rusak, jadi ikan-ikan tidak punya tempat buat melindungi telur-telurnya ya yah?” tanya aku.
”Iya kamu betul sekali nak, jadi semakin sulit untuk nelayan seperti ayah dalam mencari ikan.” jawab ayah.
Selama perjalanan ke daratan aku merenungkan apa yang yang terjadi dengan lautku. Aku berfikir betapa kayanya negeri ini. Indonesia merupakan negara maritim terbesar didunia. Kalau saja hasil laut ini bisa dikelola dengan baik, mungkin para nelayan seperti ayahku bisa lebih terjamin kehidupannya. Tetapi sepertinya pemerintah terlalu sibuk untuk memikirkan kami, rakyat pesisir yang sangat tergantung dengan laut. Untuk melaut, ayahku membutuhkan solar utnuk perahunya, namun harganya semakin lama semakin naik. Padahal kalau kita dapat mengelola hasil bumi kita secara mandiri, maka kita bisa mengatur ekonomi negara kita sendiri. Indonesia kan tidak hanya kaya akan hasil tambangnya, tetapi juga kaya akan sumber alam lain yang dapat digunakan sebagai pengganti bahan bakar minyak. Namun pemerintah belum mau memberi fasilitas untuk mengembangkannya. Yah.. aku hanya bisa merenungkannya saja. Mudah-mudahan suatu saat negaraku tercinta ini bisa tumbuh mandiri dan bisa memakmurkan seluruh rakyatnya. Amin...
Sesampainya didarat, aku berencana utuk bermain bersama teman-teman sebayaku. Sebagi anak pesisir, aku sudah akrab sekali bermain dengan laut. Aku dan teman-temanku biasa untuk berenang bersama sambil mencari ikan yang nantinya bisa kami makan bersama. Hari ini aku berkumpul dengan teman-temanku dibawah pohon kelapa dipinggir pantai. Teman-temanku yang datang bernama Dini, Sari, Ria, Adit, Toto dan Anton. Setelah semua berkumpul, kami mengambil perahu sederhana buatan kami sendiri untuk mencari ikan di laut.
Setelah sampai ditengah laut, aku, Dini dan Sari kebagian menunggu di perahu, sedangkan yang lainnya dapat kebagian menyelam untuk mencari ikan. Setelah beberapa lama akhirnya kami mendapatkan lumayan banyak ikan. Setelah cukup, kami kembali ke pinggir pantai. Sesampainya di pantai langsung saja kami mencari kayu-kayu kering. Sambil mencari batang-batang kayu kering, terkadang kami mendapatkan kepiting. Daging kepiting rasanya sangat enak. Tetapi sayang hari ini kami tidak mendapatkan kepiting. Setelah semua kayu terkumpul, kami bakar ikannya bersama-sama. Wah seru sekali rasanya. Selain rasa ikannya yang enak, berkumpul dan bercanda dengan teman-temanku adalah waktu yang sangat istimewa. Tidak terasa ikannya sudah habis, langsung saja temanku adit dan anton memanjat salah satu pohon kelapa untuk mengambil kelapa yang masih muda. Maklum kami semua kehausan. Selagi mereka memanjat pohon, Toto mengambil pisau kerumahnya yang tidak begitu jauh dari pantai. Sedangkan aku dan yang lain menunggu kelapa yang dilemparkan Adit dan Anton kebawah. Wuih.. segarnya air kelapa ini. Sehabis kami minum airnya, batok-batok kelapa itu kami cat dengan cat warna untuk dibentuk menjadi wajah-wajah manusia. How to teach reading and writing
When students are learning foreign language, they will learn reading and writing also. As a foreign language, it will be difference than their native language in daily activity. In learning to read a foreign language, the teacher will give some example to make the students easy in reading and writing the foreign language words.
The teacher can use the direct method in those sections. The teacher will introduce a new word and then she demonstrates its meaning through picture and pantomime. After they understand what it means, they can write it down in their own book. And then the students can read it together with the teacher as an instructor. Through this method, the students will understand in reading and writing a foreign language easily.

Teacher should be master the foreign language itself, especially in vocabulary, pronunciations and spelling. In speaking section, the teacher will gives the right example how to speak the language correctly. The teacher has to speak clearly to make the students understood and easy to repeating on what the teacher said.
In this section, the teacher can use the Audio-Lingual method. This method can make the students active in speaking and listening also. When the teacher makes a dialogue, she will give a good model to make the students do what she does. So, they will learn to speak and listening the foreign language easily.

Communicative approach is the purpose of applying broadly of Communicative Language Teaching by making communicative competence the goal of language teaching and by acknowledges the interdependence of language and communication.
Communication is a process: knowledge of the forms of language is insufficient.
With communicative approach, the students is hoped to enable of communication in the target language. So, the students need knowledge of the linguistics forms, meanings, and functions.
The most obvious characteristics of CLT is that almost everything that is done is with a communicative event.
